Washington, DC (June 26, 2025) —The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today shut down Medicaid enrollees in defending their right to seek health care from their provider of choice. The Court effectively gave South Carolina the green light to block Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. As a result, tens of thousands of low-income residents will be stripped of access to essential health care services, including wellness exams, birth control, cancer screenings, testing, and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and more.
In response, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund, Fatima Goss Graves, issued the following statement:
“This ruling is yet another devastating blow to health care access in the United States. In their ongoing crusade against reproductive rights, far-right extremists are dismantling vital health services for those who rely on Medicaid programs for their health needs.
This decision will likely contribute to the growing divide between states led by Republicans and those that protect health care access. While some states work to ensure care is available to all, these Republican-led states, in their scorched earth campaign to restrict access to abortion, are decimating access to all health care for their most vulnerable residents. And they won’t stop with their attacks on abortion. They’re coming for gender affirming care, for birth control access, and more. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court is letting them get away with it, as this decision and the Skrmetti decision from last week show.
Health care is a fundamental human right. Yet today, the Supreme Court has once again chosen politics over people. We stand in solidarity with Planned Parenthood South Atlantic and will continue to fight alongside them to defend and expand access to care. Everyone, no matter the state they reside in, deserves a fair chance at a healthy life.”
