WASHINGTON – The U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision today in Loper Bright v. Raimondo. The Supreme Court in a 6-3 decision overturned decades of precedent that deferred to federal agency expertise in interpreting ambiguous laws and claimed that power for the judiciary instead.
Emily Martin, Chief Program Officer at the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund, released the following statement in response:
“The Court’s disastrous decision is a judicial power grab, putting expansive new policymaking power into the hands of unelected, biased MAGA judges and threatening hard-fought protections for students, patients, and workers. This ruling opens the door to a wave of new right-wing extremist challenges to critical rights for women and families, from protections against sex discrimination in health care and education, to rules securing overtime and family leave for workers. “By overturning decades of precedent to expand the judiciary’s power to make policy, the Supreme Court majority undermines our democracy. This decision further underscores the importance of electing leaders who will fight for fundamental protections for our rights and work to restore the health of our democratic systems.”
