Background
On July 4th, President Donald Trump signed into law his signature domestic policy agenda slashing Medicaid and basic needs programs and taking a significant step toward a national abortion ban in order to pay for massive tax cuts to wealthy corporations and billionaires. The so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA) passed only after grueling sessions on both the Senate and House during which majority leadership and the President strong armed holdouts and bill opponents shined a spotlight on the harms that the legislation will inflict. This bill narrowly passed the Senate and the House with no Democratic votes.
According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the OBBBA would add $3.4 trillion to the deficit to pay for billionaire tax breaks, while kicking at least 17 million people off their health coverage. The OBBBA will result in the biggest debt increase in U.S. history, all so the ultra-rich and big corporations can cash in and a massive secret police force can pull immigrants out of communities and into a vast new detention network, while millions of Americans lose health care, food assistance, and jobs.
Despite President Trump’s claim that the OBBBA “is the most popular bill ever signed in the history of our country,” nearly two-thirds of the public (64%) hold an unfavorable opinion of this law. Trump and Congressional Republicans jammed through this unpopular bill that will hurt American families because the more people learn of the devastating effects this bill will have on their lives the stronger the opposition.
The OBBBA will harm women, children, and families by:
- Tax Cuts That Overwhelmingly Benefit Billionaires and Big Corporations
- Devastating Impacts to Health Care
- Attacks Planned Parenthood and Access to Reproductive Health Care
- Harmful Cuts to Nutrition Assistance Programs
- Increased Higher Education Costs
- Federal Efforts to Privatize Education
