The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund:
“The tentative debt ceiling deal has made one thing resoundingly clear: the Republican party cares more about wealthy political donors and pleasing the extremist wing of their party than they do workers and families in this country. Republican brinkmanship has also demonstrated that they are willing to burn everything to the ground as they pursue their extreme and unpopular policy goals. While we are relieved that allies in the room worked to avert a crisis that would serve no one’s interests, we are disappointed that the cost of this deal will be paid for by families across the country. It will reduce their access to food, reduce investments in education, and reduce housing assistance in the process – and further entrench an already-unsustainable future for the next generation of Americans.
Republicans in the House are not done with their hostage-taking. In fact, they’ll be emboldened to try and extract more from struggling families. As we look beyond this deal, the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund is committed to doing everything possible to protect families from further attacks and undoing the harm in this deal.”
