NWLC Action Fund Statement on Senate Republicans Electing Sen. John Thune as their Next Majority Leader

Washington, DC – Following the election of Senator John Thune (R-SD) to be Senate majority leader, Angel Padilla, vice president for strategy and policy at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) Action Fund, released the following statement:

“The key question following today’s Senate leadership election is whether John Thune will prioritize the needs of his constituents and all Americans—who are calling for real action on family issues like abortion and contraception, child care, paid leave, and housing—or if he will simply serve as a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s anti-women agenda.

As an organization dedicated to advancing the rights of women and girls, we refuse to compromise on our core values, including the fundamental right to bodily autonomy. In this new leadership role, we hope that he will work to deliver meaningful progress for women and families.”

NWLC – the nonpartisan sister organization to NWLC Action Fund – recently released the results of a poll conducted the day after the election which found voters across party lines want federal action on key gender justice issues such as affordable caregiving and closing the wage gap.
